Spanky's Social Networking Notes from the 2010 Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce Retreat

If It Ain't Fun, It Ain't Worth Doing!

Disclaimer: What you are about to hear is Spanky's point of view. These are things that I've seen work, information from seminars that I've been to, conversations that I've had and trial and error. As with anything in life there are dozens if not hundreds of ways to do any one thing, so you might know of a better way or someone down the round might ask you, what fool told you to do it this way?!? Just tell 'em Chris sent you. I've been told by many an IT guy that I know just enough to be dangerous -- you never know unless you try! On a serious note this isn't the absolute gospel it's a starting point.

KISS method

K Kick yourself in the butt! or Keep doing what you're doing!
I Information, that's what it's all about. (Sales, specials, savings, hours, products, services, etc.)
S Short, sweet and to the point
S Smile! while you're doing it!

Accounts that you need in the digital age

  1. Gmail -- email, calendar and analytics + google docs (sharing/collaboration)
  2. Yahoo -- Flickr and junk mail! =)
  3. Facebook
  4. Twitter
  5. YouTube
  6. Issuu
  7. Mailchimp
  8. Skype -- Tanya's issue, see what she was doing and had her fixed up in less tha 5 minutes and for FREE!!!!

NOTE: Pick a username and password use it for everything -- this isn't top secret government stuff -- letters and numbers and even an eclamation point is good too! Also it is good to be consistant so that you don't forget and can move faster

  • Don't expect them to beat your door down or for everything to fly off the shelves after making a post
  • It takes time, but now you have reach that you've never before had. With the web and these tools you can instantaneously reach your customers w/ little to no cost to you.
  • Make a fan page for your business. When you make post there also post it back on your page as well. People are more likely to give you feedback on your page, 90% of the time, people talk to people!
  • Why should I care about social media? (1) customers don't believe traditional advertising like they used to, they believe their frienda and co-workers, people they know (2) because of that SM isn't going away it is only going to get bigger and better over time.

Gear that you'll need (or could use)

  1. digital camera
  2. computer/laptop
  3. iPod touch -- less than $200
  4. flip cam -- around $125
  5. sound recorder -- Olympus the "breaks" USB for around $70 -- best bang!
  6. web cam

Programs, plugins, etc.

  1. Firefox -- the 'bestest' web browser there ever was and will be! *built in spell checker! =)
  2. Xmarks -- synchorize your bookmarks between computers and access them anywhere you have internet
  3. Soundslides -- easy as turning on a computer! $39/69
  4. Picasa -- photo managing and munipulation program offered by Google

  • Make a list of your updates to force yourself to plan ahead and that way all you have to do it copy & paste -- be careful if you type it in Word -- Facebook will not strip the coding and tags and thus it will show garbled. If you use Word then paste it into Notepad first to remove all formatting.
  • Do you need to update everyday? Maybe not, but at least more than once a year! =)
  • Get email addresses from your customers and clients! Protect their information and use it wisely, don't abuse it and annoy them!!!
  • Get your own domain/website (see below for more information)
  • An email address is more than just an 'address' ... For example chris.moore@tuomey.com (a) who you are / name (b) your website (c) your email (d) it's your company -- it's all about branding! ... less than about $75/year (.25/day)
  • We are a visual society, so use pictures
  • Short and sweet, don't write a book
  • Got Widgets? What is a widget? Widgets are fun, engaging, and useful applications. See our Safe Kids site We used interactive material/widgets, i.e. calendar, photos, facebook badge, etc.
  • Speaking of all this stuff, "sync it" ... Don't kill yourself there are tools to streamline your information.
  • Are you reading? RSS! Really simple syndication using a reader (i.e. google reader) let the information come to you
  • When in doubt google! -- one of my favorites and something I do multiple times a day! =)
  • Break new ground, don't be a follower! Designate one/two people in your group to lead this effort and let them spread their wings
  • Just because you have your own website, does this mean you can stop advertising? NO!!! You still need to advertise. For example if your business is Joe's Rib Shack, (1) do I automatically think of you when I think ribs and (2) do I know to just sit down at the computer and enter sumterribs.com, probably not. So you still need to still advertise in the paper and other outlets. Jack you can mail that check to 80 Wimbledon Court
  • Put your website on everything!!! I'm not kidding, you have to tell people it is there.
  • You don't need all the bells and whistles when building a website.
  • WORDPRESS: just like typing in Word -- a great tool and easy to use. *Contact me for more information*
  • Your customers now have more power than they ever have before
  • Google yourself -- you'd be surprised that you'll find. (i.e. my image used in a California term paper!!)
  • YOU LIKE IT FREE?!? Well there is plenty of it out there just waiting to be used. But be cautious listen to reliable groups/sources that you know for recommendations.
  • NOTEPAD: You're new best friend, strips all the coding/formatting and just gives you what you want -- just text
  • Control F is your friend!

Sites that are your friend!
